PDC (originally JDC for Japan Digital Cellular) is the Japanese digital cellular standard. It is a typical cellular system consisting of mobile units, base stations, and infrastructure links that relies on frequency re-use due to territory partitioning into "cells", and can be used for either voice or data transmission. It is intended to provide a higher capacity replacement for the previous (not always compatible) Japanese analog cellular services.
In most technical aspects, the PDC radio requirements are similar to those of the NADC TDMA systems. A major difference is the inclusion of a second frequency band near 1500 MHz in addition to the conventional 900 MHz band - this is a unique frequency use for cellular systems, requiring special radio hardware.
Japan has announced plans to migrate their digital cellular service to a CDMA based system, promoted by NTT DoCoMo.
