Function:
In conjunction with a phase locked loop, a frequency synthesizer creates very pure high frequency signals at selectable frequencies.
In a phase locked loop, a free-running oscillator is injection-locked to a very stable low frequency source. A sample of the free-running oscillator output is divided down, filtered, and compared to a known low frequency reference. The Synthesizer sets the division ratio, and hence selects the channel. It also includes the comparator.
